Poltergeister*
of Activist Borderland
Poltergesiter of Activist Borderland is a sound-based publication that reflects on the emotional aftermath of resistance against the Garzweiler II coal mine in Germany. Centered on the emotional aftermath of the 2023 eviction of Lützerath, the work captures the grief of activists and displaced residents mourning a lost landscape. A ceramic vessel serves as both cover and echo chamber for sonic debris—interviews, field recordings, and fragments from the site—evoking the sense of a distant, now-absent place. Like a seashell holding the memory of the sea, it offers a way to connect to and process unresolved emotions tied to ecological loss and the fight for climate justice.
* Poltergeist: german for a noisy ghost who is unable to pass into the afterlife due to unresolved emotions and psychological stress.
